Merengue
How did Merengue dancing start? No one is quite sure. Some say that it began when some Dominican villagers had a victory party, and, because the returning hero of the revolution had a wounded leg, all the people limped as they danced, dragging one foot as the hero did.
Many people say that it began when slaves, who were chained together as they cut the sugar cane, had to drag one of their legs as they worked to the beat of drumming.

Great news on November 3rd! Elvis Crespo has won the 2005 Latin Grammy Award for Best Merengue Album, Mejor Album de Merengue, for his super album, Saborealo. The other albums in the category were top merengue CDs including En Vivo 2004 by

Juan Luis Guerra is one of our very favorite merengue artists. On his album, Ojala Que Lleva Café, there are two wonderful merengue songs, “La Gallera” and “Visa Para Un Sueño". You can dance merengue to the sound of his very sweet voice.

Merengue:  is fast-paced and may leave you breathless, but it’s fun and a great workout. Most people find it a lot easier to dance than Salsa. While it's truly a national dance in the Dominican Republic, they love merengue's quick 2-4 rhythm in Cuba and Puerto Rico, too. Mamajuana is a Dominican merengue group that uses traditional instruments like güira, atabals, panderas and tamboras, and they blend in some sounds from all parts of the island; their set  called “Mamajuana “ is a great Latin music CDfor dancing. This is a very energetic Latin beat!

Bravo! at 1001 Connecticut Ave NW,  In Miami, you'll find a hot Latin dance club called El Covacho, at10730 NW 25th Street. Los Angeles' downtown Mayan Theatre, 1038 S. Hill St., has salsa and merengue on Saturday nights.
